Before You Sell Gold, Read about Their Differences

April 29, 2022

Want to sell gold you own for cold, hard cash? Well, you’re in luck since gold is a valuable metal. Whether you sell gold jewelry or coins, you can profit from this venture. However, what you'll earn depends on the type of gold you want to sell, so it’s good to brush up on their differences if you own various pieces.

Here are some of them before you sell gold.

Color

The first way to determine the type of gold you have is to examine its overall color. Contrary to popular belief, this mineral doesn’t just come in one shade; there are various colors! These include:

  • Yellow: Pure gold is yellow in tone. It’s the most hypoallergenic of the golds. But when this type of gold is mixed with other metals, it produces entirely new hues like the rest we’ll discover below.
  • White: White gold may look like silver at first glance, but look closely, and you’ll see it has an off-white tone with a hint of pale yellow, pink or brown. This alloy is made of pure gold mixed with one or more white metals, like platinum.
  • Rose: This is gold with a pinkish hue, made by mixing pure gold with copper and silver.
  • Green: Green gold, made of pure gold and silver (and sometimes copper), has a greenish tint.

Markings

To sell gold at the best price, you can also check the markings on your pieces, specifically the “K,” which stands for “karats.” The karats indicate the amount of gold in an item.

  • Pure 100 percent gold (yellow) is labeled with “24K.” However, pure gold is very soft and rarely used in jewelry. You probably won’t find “24K” on gold jewelry pieces.
  • The karat markings include 10K, 12K, 14K, 18K, and 22K. The higher the number, the higher the percentage of gold used in the piece.

Most gold jewelry used in the United States is created with 14K so that you may find this marking on your jewelry.

Other markings to observe before you sell gold include:

  • GP or GEP: GP, which stands for “gold-plated,” indicates that the item is stainless steel or brass coated in gold (at least 10K). The coating is very thin, so it flakes off over time and is generally not as durable as other types of plating, such as RGP or GF. GEP, “gold electroplated,” means that the item is brass coated in gold (at least 10K). GEP has a thicker gold layer which makes it more durable than GP.
  • GO or RGP: RGP stands for “rolled gold plated,” and GO stands for “gold overlay.” These items are stainless steel, brass, or copper with a 10K or higher gold coating. The coating is thicker on RGP and GO than on GP or GEP. GF. This means that the item is gold-filled. GF items are usually made of copper or brass, with a sheet of gold applied to the exterior. The sheet can be at least 10K.
  • 925: A “925” marking indicates that it has been made with silver covered in gold (vermeil). It can also be identified by its silvery color and lack of a mark anywhere on the piece.
